The Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce and local businesses have teamed up to create a Sustainable Advocacy Committee.
Mission -
To help the business community think more consciously about their processes, supply chain, and services/products in order to create a more thoughtful and sustainable future for a thriving Pittsburg community.
Description -
As stated, at the Sustainability Advocacy Committee we advocate for the protection of the environment and the people in our community by recognizing that what often negatively impacts the environment also, disproportionately, impacts marginalized and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) individuals and communities.
We approach this mission with an Intersectional frame of mind. Intersectionality, a term coined by critical race theorist Kimberlé Crenshaw, is defined as a theoretical framework for understanding how aspects of a person's social and political identities combines to create unique modes of discrimination and privilege.
As business owners in one of the most diverse cities in Contra Costa County, we want to advocate for a more ethical, inclusive and just way of life for all of our community members. Our goal is to help the business community to think more consciously about their mission, processes, supply chain, and services/products. We want to enrich the lives of our fellow citizens by helping to create a thoughtful and sustainable future for a thriving Pittsburg community.

How Will We Accomplish This By-
- Helping to raise awareness through educating community members about the impact of their everyday decisions on the environment (and those affected along those varying supply chains).
- Create community engagement in the form of presentations, public events, one on one business system reviews, and outreach.
- Advocate for city legislation that encourages current and future City of Pittsburg businesses to incorporate sustainable practices into their business model.
- Encourage economic development to recruit ethical green, vegan, and sustainable businesses to come to Pittsburg and enrich our communities.
- Have businesses prioritize transparency in their business models, with the goal of bringing true value to our community.
Obstacles Facing Businesses -
The Sustainable Advocacy Committee is made up of Chamber Staff, local business owners and concerned residents of the City of Pittsburg. The Committee recognized that to achieve this goal, we need to overcome some of they typical obstacles facing businesses today -
* Barrier to cost for many local businesses
* Lack of education on ways business can be greener and then the product or resources to accomplish that.
* Restaurant Alliances- With this handy tool, bulk purchasing assistance may become available.
* Chamber can order for whole-sale for compostable
